Iron Heart

       Iron Heart

Death is near, time ebbs away, you cannot stay,
old and lonely, on your death bed you lay.
Iron caged heart, joylessly beats beneath your breast,
disillusioned with life, was it all a struggle, a thankless quest?

Fading memories of dreams once young,
men you had, lusted for, romantic lyrics you sung.
Discarded lovers broken in your wake,
because you became hard of heart, to closed off for Cupid’s sake.

When loves arrow missed time after time,
you added one more iron bar to hearts confine.
Bitterness became a pervasive taste,
any chance of loves redemption gone at pace.

Faces blur of those long since lost,
but still, you caged your heart.
Was it worth the cost?
